Sorry for the "bloggling gap' we have experienced in the last week. Kris and i left Skopje MK last Sunday and headed for Vienna Austria.  We had one flight in eight days to leave MK and then we had to stay in Austria for two-days until going to the USA. We did get to see some lovely sights in Vienna.  There is a rich history and some wonderful stories woven into the city.  Mozart, Brahms, and Sigmund Freud are the city's favorite sons!!!  Enough of my history channel moment. ( I do want to say that my visit there inspired me to purchase "The Idiot's complete guide to Europen History.")

We headed out on Tuesday morning to make our way back to the good old USA! With bags checked and boarding pass in hand we waited to fly from Vienna to Frankfurt and then on to Philadelphia.  Kris noticed that our flight to Germany would be late -- that was not good in that we had an hour between flights and it was obvious we would not make the connection. Austrian Air changed us to a Toronto then to Philly flight.  If anyone asks you to go to Tornoto --- passionately say NO!  The airport is a mess and the process of going through Candanian customs and then USA customs is a real pain!

Worst of all our luggage was lost.  We were told it would be put through to Philly -- it was via Frankfurt and would not get to Philly till Thursday.  Whereby USAirways sent them to Harrisburg and they sat there for three days under "Deputy Dog" search them out on Saturday. What a mess!!

We landed in Tornoto - got through customs - dealt with missing bags - and endured 6 hours of delays -- finally landed at 10PM in Philly and was in our bed by 12 midnight.  Obviously these are the highlights (or better the low-lights) and we have more to tell.  Trust me the rest of the story will be showing itself in this blogg and in countless sermon illustrations for months to come.

Tomorrow (Sunday) after 13 days in Macedonia, Kris and i will start our journey home. Our trip has been cut short because the conflict in the church is not resolved and the powers at be, do not see it getting resolved real soon. This also means that our church's team of 12 is cancelled as well.  There is great disappointment here and at home that this could not have worked out. Never the less, what seems to be a huge failure may turn into a great victory and maybe future revival for the church and the country.  I had breakfast with a Macedonian Pastor and he was excited that this situation may have unearthed what ultimately God wanted to do, more then any team or any preaching series that I had planned.  So what has been learned through this experience....

1. A personal offence in one culture and country may or may not be as serious in another or it could be the worst violation of love and good will -- there is no rhyme or reason. Humility, grace, repentance and willingness to try to resolve it is your only hope -- and even that is up in the air.  we like things "fixed fast" in the USA -- doesn't always happen in other fields.

2. Resolving conflict is not done in the same way or timetable as per the country and culture. We are use to a very quick, instaneous society and relationships in the USA -- not so elsewhere.

3. The culture is NEVER to be used as an excuse for obeying the Bible!  I appreciate the sensitivity to cultural issues -- but obedience is obedience is obedience.  I believe in a post modern world this will become a more divisive issue and very prevelant in our world! Tne truth is truth -- and we can know truth and we can and should be dogmatic about the truth!

4. Buy travel insurance (we have lost a large amount of money on non-refurndable tickets).

5. Missionaries - trying to embrace and assimilate into a certain culture have a difficult time separating cultural mores and the need to push for Biblical obedience unto the people they are ministering to. This is a tough one - i saw over and over. Missionaries are in a catch-22 - if they demand a disciple's response to new Christians it could shut the door of ministry.  But they are not helping them understand if they don't demand the proper response to the Lordship of Christ.  When in doubt -- the Bible and Lordship should win out!

6. Your presence in a place has as much of impact as does what you do or the ministry you might dispense. The fact is I was not able to preach or teach or minister -- however my willingness to come hear spoke loudly to those involved with the situation.

7. This is a very common thing that missionries face -- it is absolutely horrifying and disappointing to us. Fact is this stuff happens ALL THE TIME!!!  Probably more so then we would like to hear!

8. There are some incredible ministry happening in MK that we did not know.  the other pastors involved opened up contacts and relationships with other wonderful believers.  There are a number of thriving churches in Skopje and effective ministry happening.

9. There is always TOMORROW!  The bridge is still there and now we wait to see what God will do. We will pray that a year from now our team will get to come to MK and minister as we had hoped.  There will be another day -- we will pray for that day to be redeemed!

I remember when i was a child and heard a curse word from the neighbor kid. In my naivite, i came home and said the word in my mother's presence. She was horrified. Her reaction was enough to know that I had violated a major rule and possibly might be leaving the earth and going to heaven. She said, "where did you learn that four-lettered word?"  I was not very old but still thought to myself -- "four-lettered words are bad? I should not use four-lettered word?"  That means no CAKE - cake is a four lettered word? BATH -- hey this may work out in my favor?  Seeing I was confused she tried to explain why the word was bad. Her attempt to explained got lost in my six-year old mind.

I am going to be 48 in a few weeks and i have discovered another four-letter word I believe is a curse -- WAIT!  I am not very good at waiting. Sitting still in my mind leads to lack of blood flow which ultimately may kill you!!  Wait -- is like saying NO! To me its not even a "maybe" -- it is hard to wait. If we were completely honest, waiting is hard for all of us. Being idle. Hearing nothing but silence. Being alone with not agenda, goal, timeline or anticipated deadline is difficult.

YET in the past few days I am learning the truth "they that WAIT upon the Lord will renew their strength."  Or how about this one - "BE STILL (that's another way to say WAIT) and know i am God."  For a week we have been sitting and waiting. Waiting for meetings. Waiting for conversations. Waiting for decisions. JUST WAITING!

And through it all God's presence comforts us. Sustains us. Encourages us. We wait -- HE WAITS WITH US.  As a pastor I am reminded how important it is to sit in a hospital waiting room with a church member when their loved one is going through surgery.  I may not say a word, but sitting and waiting is a fantastic ministry. When people are faced with sitting until they hear from someone or just to get a word from the Lord, there needs to be others of us who wait with them and FOR THEM!

I don't like waiting!!!  But through it God does His work of shaping, conforming and encouraging -- much better then we would press ahead and try to fix it on our own.  A matter of fact, if I wasn't still and waiting -- I would have missed what God was trying to do. Instead of "Nike's" famous "JUST DO IT!" slogan....I am starting a new ad campaign.... "JUST WAIT!"

You ever hear the story about the well intentioned missionary who went to a foreign country and during his first sermon in his newly aquired language got a few words mixed up and instead of telling people that Jesus loved them, he instead told them they were ugly fat ogre and their mother's a cow!  Obviously when crossing a cultural divide in any locationis difficult.  But when conflict is involved it intensifies and cloud any well intention.  The last few days we have been dealing with a major conflict in the church in Skopje. It involves parent's protection of a child, even when the child has done wrong; the high value given to education and how it is tied to diginnity and self worth; the feeling that Americans get everything so you don't deserved to be heard and most difficult that our cultural distinctives trump any Bible principles. It has been heart wretching to say the least.

The fact is Christianity is "counter cultural." Everything about being a Christian is and should be seen as directly opposite of everything we should be use to in this world.  That is why Paul say that we should turn from our "former way of liviing" and the "darkness and futility of our minds" as when we did not know Christ. Christianity is NOT American -- ther are many things in the American cultural that is repugnate to the Lord. Mature christians from all corners of the globe need to step back from there cultural and ask the question -- "what does the Bible say we are to do?" One of our elder at NewSong constantly reminds us - "we are not to be concerned about the little "c" - culture -- but always be concerned about the big "C" - Christ!  Good words.

We are continuing the work through the difficulties and especially trying to find a way to minister in the middle of a difficult situation. But it is a great reminder to not alot the world and lifestyle and the heritage that you might be use to ever hinder you from following the word of God and doing the things that Christ and HIS CUTURE demands of us who are citizen's of heavn. This is our fifth trip to Macedonia and each time it is a little bit more familiar.  You feel fulfilled not getting lost!  Yesterday (Wednesday) we spent the day with Phil and Lynn, got some shopping done and then hang out at the apartment where we are living.  In the evening we went to the "Grand Opening" of a new store owned by one of the young men in the church. He is selling USA worship music (Brooklyn Tab and Paul Baloche to name a few); Brite filtered water pitchers; and GNC health food suppliments. Go figure?? That's MK for you! We spent the rest of the night with a young man from our church Greg Risser. Greg was one of my pastoral students. He came over to MK on one of our trips and is here for two-years, serving in the church. A tremendous guy and very insightful concerning ministry and understanding culture. He has become a tremendous prayer warrior - what a joy to see how God is working in his life.  He stayed late -- like past 2AM late!  We were vombies come the morning. I worked on a sermon and napped all day. In the late afternoon we met up with another girl from our church Heather Goasdone. Heather has been teaching the missionary kids and is doing well!  She heads home right after our team leaves in July.  We are hoping she will get a teaching position in Lancaster -- she's a special gal! We had a great dinner and parted ways -- she had a party to go to and we took a taxi back to our apartment. Another day complete and we did not get lost once! The small miracles of missionary work! Kris and I arrived in Skopje - no worse for wear! We left from Lancaster on Monday morning at 8:30AM and headed to the Philadelphia airport. Going to Macedonia is not like hopping a flight to Disney. There are 100's of flights to Orlando daily -- one or two from Macedonia and  two other locations that you must leave from if you are travelling from the USA!
We then took a flight to Washington Dulles Airport to connect with Austrian Air. Austrian was purchased by Lufthansa which controls most of the "strange" European cities. They are the "Alleghany Airlines" of Europe. That was an eight hour flight and as I had asked people to pray....we got the bulkhead seats!  Bulkhead is a poorman's first class seating. That and the emergency row! With just having surgery, it was important for me to stretch out my legs. At 6'6" and "great" in size, the extra room was important.
I did not sleep much. A little dozing off after a lovely dinner and watching two movies - "Hollywoodland" and "De Ja Vu" with Denzel Washington. The latter was the winner! We arrived in Vienna and had a five hour lay over. Thank the Lord for Starbucks. There was no real seating anywhere in the terminal, but Starbucks had some great couches and chairs where we took a short nap (and I had a grande carmel latte)! We talked with a group of nice students from Northwest Missouri College -- music students on a tour of great music history sites. POI - Mozart lived in Vienna!!
Finally got on our flight to MK - an hour and 20 minutes. ALL OUR BAGS ARRIVE: yes friends I have underwear!!! There are little things to be grateful for and getting your bags is one of them!  Phil, Lynn, Greg and Heather were waiting!, and got us to our apartment. We will be staying in the home of missionaries who are in Albania for the month. What a blessing. We had a great meal and some MK creamy ice cream and then collapsed for 12 hours!
One suggestion - there has to be a way for airlines to take out two or three rows of seats and give all the other rows 2-3 inches of extra room. Normal sized people struggle with airline seating -- you can imagine how uncomfortable it is for me. Oh well -- we arrive safe and sound. First day is complete on this month long adventure!

Tomorrow morning Kris and I head off for a month of ministry in the capital city of Skopje, Macedonia. Mk is a tiny Balkan country tucked between Bulgaria, Albanian, Serbia and bordered by Greece. This former communist, Yugoslavian country is controlled by the Eastern Orthodox Church and in need of revival. We will be ministering with the Word of Hope Church and working with our missionary. Pray for us and especially our NewSong team that will join us at the end of the month. We will be conducting english classes and attempting to do some evangelism. Pray...Pray...Pray!

While I was out visiting churches, my church family was involved with In and Out Sunday.  This began last year with an idea -- "what would happen if a church cancelled its services on a Sunday and hit the streets serving the community and doing good works?"  Literally we wanted to take what the church has IN the church and make it available OUT in the community!  Today was the second year and the sequel was as good as the original from all the reports. I got to NewSong just as testimony time began and to have a hot dog with the flock! It was thrilling to hear what God did with our people and through our people.  By the sounds of the testimonies, there were a lot more projects focused at individual needs and people who desperately needed help. What a thrill to listen how our church family was used. So a major shout out to Young Le the director of the project.  A major shout out to all our small group leaders who organized their teams and "delivered the goods." And of course the staff who was behind the scenes and making sure the volunteers got all the support they needed.  This was a huge week for serving. Through the week over 200 people participated at our church for work nights. So a final and giant shout out to the NewSong family -- YOU ARE BEYOND AMAZING!!!

Lancaster Evangelical Free Church (Lititz)
I was really missing NewSong after being five weeks away -- but today was a winner all the way around!  What a wonderful morning I had visiting LEFC and Pastor Doug Winne. LEFC is significant for a number of reasons to me, but most importantly is they stood with me and our elders in 1998 when we began to start NewSong. This was the first time ever visiting and I am so glad I did. First, LEFC has people stationed from the parking lot to the auditorium to greet and welcome you. What a tremendous tone that sets for the morning. The worship was excellent. Andy Martin the worship pastor has a sweet spirit and does a great job facilitating the corporate worship. One note, they were singing a new song this morning and worship team came out right away and sang it for the congregation and the words up on the screen getting us use to it. When it was our turn, we were able to sing with confidence. The focus of the morning was love in the body and although the songs were not exclusively about that theme, most of the songs pointed your mind in that way. We sang mostly up tempo choruses but all with spirit-minded, God honoring feel. Kuddos to the worship team, one of the best I have seen on my tour. It followed with a brief announcement about their VBS – tis the season!! Then came the message - Pastor Doug has been preaching on the church and today started looking at LEFC’s core values. Doug has been with the church 25 years and shared a story about conducting a man’s funeral this week who had introduced him to the church. In one sense, it had nothing to do with the message. On the other, it had everything to do with love, because Doug was able to share from his heart what this man meant to him, and most importantly how God used him to get Doug to Lancaster. His message was out of Acts 2 and John 13 and the importance of love in the church. His points - Love is a commitment to each other; Love is self sacrificing and love is warm and fuzzy! Strange outline but very effective. One thing I will not forget was a quote from one of Doug’s professors, Jay Adams. When it is hard to love, Adams says “Just Do IT!!” Adams added – “Actions precedes attitude!” AMEN!! How refreshing to hear that kind of statement in this post-modern/emergent church era; when today’s prophets would say “showing love without the right heart is hypocritical.” Look sometimes we need to show love when I don’t FEEL like it! He finished his message and the worship team led the church in a song from the movie “Gospel” – “I need you to survive.” What a powerful song and what a way to end a service – very moving!! Doug asked the Elders and Deacons to come to the front and link hands as they sang! I thought the service was over and started walking up to say hi to Doug, when the Missions Pastor invited all the summer teams up for a commissioning. They have a number of summer short term teams. Much like NewSong and very encouraging. It was just one more thing that lifted my spirit about LEFC. I was so encouraged with this church. One last thought – I really appreciated that LEFC doesn’t try to be “slick.” That authenticity goes a long way!
 
Grace Brethren Church Lititz
So I have a problem…after visiting Grace and LEFC I have two churches in Lititz to recommend people to go to. Grace Church (they have dropped the Brethren) is lead by Pastor Scott Distler and is doing a great job with this flock. Grace was pastored by Jerry Young for 30+ years and Scott came about three years ago. Scott has an evangelist’s heart and it is very evident. The service has a real “seeker church” feel to it. But I was thrilled by the thoroughly Biblical based message. The service began with an excellent worship package. Very upbeat and contemporary. They had a tight rhythm section with a sax player, who I discovered later was their youth pastor. After the worship time, the youth guy introduced the message by using a movie clip from “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” starring Brad-gelina! The series is entitled – “Reel Families” – they are looking at marriage and family relationships and using movies to introduce each message. This is very effective and again indicative of the seeker formula for success. After the clip, the worship team did a special number/worship song. I was not sure which it was and whether we were to sing along or not. Scott was up next, his message was from 1 Peter 3 – “Why don’t Husbands’ Prayers Get Answered?”  He did a good job explaining the text and highlighting the fact that wives are a “weaker vessel.” I know there are different interpretations of this text, especially in light of the context and previously passage where Peter is discussing believing husbands who have strayed from the faith and how the wife is to bring him back. But I like how Scott handle it – noting that a wife is to be seen as a valuable, fragile vessel. To illustrate it he was handling a white and blue vase. He told everyone that it was a valuable vessel and described how husbands handle it. After a while he was tossing it around and then he let it crash to the floor (obviously not a valuable vessel, huh?). The illustration was powerful. He finished the message looking at six ways to treat your wife from the last part of the text. One downer – to illustrate the idea of kindhearted he said that in Middle Eastern cultural the seat of the emotions was not the heart but the bowel. For humor he said what if some of the popular love songs that we sing replaced heart with bowel. Such as “I left my BOWEL in San Francisco” and Toni Braxton’s “Unleash my BOWEL!” It was funny by him saying it, but the worship band came up and played those and other songs replacing heart with bowel. I don’t think it was necessary and it distracted me. However, they are a creative bunch at Grace! He finished the message giving an opportunity for any person who feels their lives need to be put back together to be prayed for and to stand. This is where you see Scott’s evangelist’s heart. They finished the morning with song and dismissed. Again, I have nothing but good things to say about Grace and LEFC. If lived in the northern part of the county, it would be a hard choice which one I would attend.

Well its that time of year - wedding season!  I have already performed two weddings this summer and I am on sabbatical. This past winter/spring I was counseling 12 different couples planning to get married. This has been one of the most benefical aspects of pastoral ministry. In a real sense you are molding and shaping two lives and making a significant impact on the future of a family. This past year i realized that one of the underlining reasons that Newsong has grown and has the depth that we have is because of the major investment that has been made towards all our young couples desiring to get married. In addition, i recognized that my standard for marrying a couple might be preceived as "over the top" -- but in the end has remarkable results. here are the marks of our premarriage process.

1. We call it "Pre-commitment Counseling" primarily because we expect a couple to come to us before they are engaged. Once a couple has a ring and starts picking a date, you can not properly give them the counsel or start to address issues in their relationship. Once the date is set, the pastor/counselor has a gun to his head. I have seen couples get after their problem areas because they want to get engaged and there is no external pressure on them -- like a mother wanting to order the invitations or schedule the photographer. This simple standard of starting the counseling before engagement has been brilliant!

2. We have anywhere from 13-16 sessions with each couple. If I am meeting with a couple every 2-3 weeks, this means our process will take 8-10 months. Time is a good thing. You can mircowave marriage preparation; it is a crockpot approach!! Sessions involve taking a compatability survey, watching teaching videos, standard sessions that I have given each couple and wedding planning. The most benefical aspect of the process is the discipline of a couple meeting with me and having someone ask - "what's happening; how are you doing; how can i sort out the latest discovery in your relationship that has you all upset!"

3. Each couple must make a commitment and begin to build into their relationship a serious involvement in church life. Both must be baptized and members of a local church. If its NewSong great -- but some church! And not just that, involved in Sunday school, a small group, serving in ministry and have made a significant contact with someone in leadership. Over the years, I have discovered that most Christians who get divorced have not been connected significantly to a church. They have little relational connectiveness, know one in leadershi knows them and the church is not willing to step in and rescue them. This is a fatal mistake.

4 They must be willing to declare the words in their vows - "forever removing the option of separation or divorce..." Trust me I get some wide eyes looking at me from the congregation when the bride and groom repeat those words. But Christian couples can make that promise and if they can't say it -- I won't marry them. A matter of fact, my first major session with a couple is doing a personal Bible study on the issue of divorce and remarriage and I ask them to come up with their personal belief statement on the issue. Then we go to the Bible and look and understand what God really said! They are shocked to find out that for two Christians -- there are NO options. It is marriage, fixing a marriage problem or death do us part!!  If divorce occurs -- discipline follows -- that is why a good church connection is so important!

5. Finally, I teach, believe and expect that the couple is committed to a Biblical view to the marriage roles. The Bible is clear, the husband is the spiritual head and leader and the wife is the submissive servant. She is NOT a doormat, but she is expected to allow him to lead. And in his leading, he is expected to love and encourage her extravagantly!  This means they must master the "Love and Respect" principle. Emerson Eggerich has written the best book on marriage communication and the difference with men and women and how they work out these Biblical roles - they are to love and respect each other (Ephesians 5:33). In a day that young women have been taught "that they are woman hear them roar..." and not to let the man get the upper hand and the most important thing to can gain in a relationship is respect -- most women struggle with "showing their husband the respect that he NEEDS and deserves."  And most men are so self-center and still caveman like, in is hard for them to learn the art of loving here especially in her "language" (there is the second most important marriage book - Gary Chapman's Love Languages). Once couples learn the love and respect secret it will transform them.

That is our distinctives when it comes to getting couples ready for marriage. I know it sounds old-fashion and even nazi-like! But it works!!!  Just look around our church and see the fruit of this crucial work. It has been another level of discipleship in our church. The other proof is most of the counseling I do with married couples are people who I did not marry!  Love is in the air -- I want it to smell like the beauty of spring and not like fresh laid manure!

Ever since my sabbatical started, i feel like everyother day i am going to the doctor; call the doctor's office, calling one of the nurses and docs in our church to determine if what the doctor told was true and/or going to the drug store. My bathroom sink area looks like a counter at the local pharmacy.  I have seven or eight bottles of pills. My first thought was -- "does these pills work against each other and cause the potency of the pills to be negated?" but then again the doctors and pharmacist should know what they are doing! Right?

I would have thought so but yesterday gave me doubt!  In preparation for an upcoming mission trip I was getting all my medicine ready. i had to get a refill of one of the pills so I was heading over to my local pill distributor (which will remain nameless). As i looked at the pill bottles I couldn't remember what one of the pills were perscribed for.... it was around the time i hurt my knee from too much work at the beginning of the sabbatical. but i had my celebrex for that. Being confused I took the bottle along to the drug store. While filling the order prescription, i asked the lady if she could tell me what these were for? She took the bottle to the pharmacist and returned using a quiet voice and leaning towards me -- "they are for yor depression -- it is the antidepression medicine."

Anti-depression? You are kidding? I was stunned -- and asked her to see if they would give me these pills for inflammation of the knee? Seconds later the pharmacist came out and said that she needed to check the original order. Minutes later she returned white faced and with a sick look as if she lost a close friend. "Mr. Mitchell, there has been a terrible mistake - how many of these pills did you take?"  I remembered it was one or two. There was relief coming on her face -- as panic came over me. "this prescription was faxed over and the fax cut off the full name -- we guessed and gave you a medicine for those with bi-polar condition." She was falling over herself apologizing. I asked if it did any damage -- she assured me that taking two would not do anything.  She refunded my money and fulfilled every request in a timely manner!

The morale of the story -- check every prescription you get and read the papers they send home. In a later investigation, i learned that if i had kept taking them, there would had been some major psychological affects of me and my moods! I laugh at the situation now and thank God they didn't give me birth control or female hormonal replacement medicine.

Parachurch Problem: What’s the Church to do?
 
So what problems do parachurch ministries cause? There are a number of significant things that can affect the Church’s future health and especially a Christian’s spiritual growth. Here are a few:
1)      Watered down doctrinal statement – because the parachurch works with various churches and denominations it can not be too specific or detailed on its theological positions. A matter of fact, the more general and ambiguous the better! Because of that, most parachurch ministries will not define important doctrinal positions. Yes, they will get the gospel right most of the time, that’s a given. But isn’t the rest of the scripture as important? Aren’t they getting into discussions with participants on specific theological issues? Let’s take baptism for one. A person gets saved through a college campus ministry Bible study. After they get saved, they hear they should be baptized. When they ask a campus minister he suggests they get sprinkled because of his Presbyterian background, but the new convert is invited to a Baptist church. One of the well meaning Bible study attendees suggests that they go over to the college pool and baptize them immediately because that is how they did it in the Bible? No that’s conflict!
2)      Disjointed generational ministry – A Christian father once shared with me his heart break about his kids. When the kids were teens, he got them involved with a parachurch youth organization. It was exciting to see a hundred kids from different churches and high schools get together for fun and Bible study and outreach. The problem was when he graduated from HS and went to church, the son thought it was boring, he did not know any of the kids his age and really did not know anyone at the church. Most importantly, he did not have a relationship with a pastor or church leader to help him continue to grow. The parachurch youth leader had moved on to the new crop of students! Because most parachurch ministries focus on one age group or one life stage or one gender, it misses out in what the church has to offer – doing ministry while involved with multigeneration of people.
3)      Human resource crisis – There are only so many Christians and especially mature Christians and leaders. A church has a difficult time finding, recruiting and engaging people to do ministry. Now a parachurch comes along and starts luring workers away to help fill its needs. And most of the time, the parchurch leaders don’t feel it’s necessary to go to the church leaders or pastors and ask permission of the church to recruit its people. They are very independent and do not see its need to defer to the church. As a pastor it is heart breaking to disciple, grow, and prepare a person in your church with the design to use them in a specific role. But most times you don’t tell them until they are ready. Then you learn that some other ministry has invited them to serve.
4)      Myopic ministry strategy – The word myopic has the idea of tunnel vision or single focus. Most parachurch ministries focus on one area of ministry – let’s say evangelism! And so it works at leading people to Christ, which is fantastic. But it has little forethought on discipleship, connecting them into fellowship, helping them develop their gifts and start serving. You see, only the church can provide that type of ministry strategy – a holistic approach. Now if an evangelistic organization were to come into a church and help it be more effective in winning the lost – then it is fulfilling why it is there – “coming along side” the church!
5)      Conflict in discipleship, counseling and discipline – When you minister to people there is a loyalty and love that develops. My dad came to Christ through a Billy Graham crusade. To his dying day, you dare not say anything negative about Dr. Graham and he gave the Graham Association money regularly 30 years later!!! The other thing about working with people is that every now and then someone goes off the tracks spiritually and needs direction. Some get so entwined in sin they need loving, yet firm discipline as outlined in Matthew 18, which is solely entrusted to the church. That mix of love/loyalty and the need for discipline gets real messy when the parachurch is involved with counseling and discipleship outside of the bounds of the church. A young man started attending our church and he was in the midst of a divorce. When asked where he was getting help he said a counseling center. The counseling center never directed him to go back to his church and the disobedient wife never was confronted with her sinful behavior and attitude. Today there is such a spirit of independence in the Christian community, but the church creates accountability, support and Biblical fulfills its role as the shepherd of people’s soul.
6)      Unqualified leadership – As I previously mentioned, there are not enough mature Christians to go around and what I have observed over the years is a constant willingness to lower the standards of qualifications when it comes to leaders in the parachurch. Most times people in leadership in the parachurch could not cut it in the church. Not to mention, women take front and center leadership in these organization. Not that women should not have significant roles in the church; however if they are involved in gospel ministry and doing teaching and preaching, they should not have authority over men.
7)      Competing Fundraising efforts – Look you can’t spend a dollar twice! There is only so much money to go around! The tithe belongs to the church. The Bible is clear that you don’t split the tithe between the church and other ministries. I also hope the parachurch has the integrity to encourage its supporters to give to their church first and then to them. However, I have not heard that message much for parachurch leaders.
8)      Failure to hand back ministry to the church – In 1991, Bill McCartney the founder and president of Promisekeepers proclaimed that PK would be around 10 years and then turn the men’s ministry movement back to the local church. In is 2007 and PK is still renting stadiums! That is just one parachurch ministry – but you can tell the same story over and over and over. If a parachurch is truly there for a “moment of ministry time’ and then its intention is to turn what they start back over to the church – then why doesn’t it happen! Simple overhead and some one needs a job!
There you have it: the reasons I am troubled with the parachurch organization. Let me say it again, “I do not think everyone is wrong, unbiblical or sinning!’ However, I do believe they have overstepped their bounds, they have supplanted the church’s authority and they are confusing Christians in how they do ministry and how God desires ministry to happen! I do not believe that the parachurch will ever go away; but I do believe that the church will and must get stronger and no longer provide excuses for why parachurch ministries are needed. What is the church to do? Become discerning and always – always – always – defer back to the church as the ministry authority in their lives. If you have a bad church and so you are drawn to the parachurch – DON’T GIVE UP ON THE CHURCH!!! FIX IT!! And if the church doesn’t desire to change – go find another church. But for goodness sake – stop walking on the side of your foot. Walk steadfast in the organization and organism in which ordained to do His bidding on earth!

Parachurch: One Size Does Not fit All?
 
As we learned from the plethora of scripture we examined, the church is God’s primary plan for this age. God’s glory is reflected through the Body of Christ, the Church.  It is Church that Christ is returning for at the end of this Age. The Church is unique to God. God has specifically defined what the Church is. How do we define the Church?
“The Church is a group of born again believers…
….commit to each other in a specific location (members)….
…. purposed to fulfill the Great Commission (mission)….
….devoted to the word, worship, prayer, fellowship, and service (maturity)….
…. being lead by a Biblically qualified group of male elders (ministers)….
….with the intent to birth and establish new churches (multiplication)….
….all for the glory of Christ (magnification).”
 
With that as a definition, a ministry organization is either a church or its not. A group of Christians can meet in a home and have a Bible study but without the other aspects it is NOT a church. A handful of young believing zealots can aggressively  witness on their college campus, but with no elders or desire to birth or plant a church, its not a church.
 
But does that mean all parachurch ministries are wrong, sinful or unbiblical and should be disbanded? Absolutely not. I am just pointing out a theological issue that needs to be considered. And certainly not all parachurch ministries are the same. Some are truly “coming along side” of the church and others are overstepping their bounds and attempting to replace the practical and spiritual authority of the church. How can you discern the difference? Over the years I have thought about the parachurch in three categories of ministries:
 
INTER – PARA – This would be the organizations that were started or function as a cooperative effort of a number of churches working on ministry together. This ministry has happened because of the inter-relative effort of a number of churches. In the late 80’s the church I was serving joined up with five other churches and started a crisis pregnancy center. The pastors served as board members and gave oversight. It had its own staff and later a board of directors assumed the leadership with the pastors serving as an advisory board. It was separate from all of the churches, but doing a function that NO ONE CHURCH could have done. Inter-parachurch organizations could be a camp, schools, missions consortium, a youth event alliance or a even a counseling ministry. It is a separate organization formed by a collection of churches to serve all the churches. The key is that it got its birth, life, sustenance and direction from the church.
 
INTRA – PARA – This is an organization that is separate from any churches, but could not operate unless it worked inside or through the church. Publishing companies, Group, Gospel Light and Scripture Press create curriculum but the material must have a church using it resources for it to have life. Organizations like Pioneer Clubs, AWANA, Walk thru the Bible and other parachurch ministries can’t operate its programs without churches hosting them. The intra-parachurch is truly there to support the church and make it more effective.
 
EXTRA – PARA – These types of parachurch ministries are “stand alone.” What I mean by that, is they can do evangelism and discipleship without the church. They have their own leadership structure and in no way looks for the church for direction. They don’t even defer to the Church when the Church should be making the call. Mission Boards are the most well known. They operate with nearly no church input; they make decisions that the Church should be making; and even when the Church would not move forward with, lets say a potential missionary,  most mission boards will. Campus Crusade, Youth for Christ, Navigators and others are famous for taking the place of the Church and having no plan to transfer it back to the Church. Even college and seminaries are extras in that they will do the equipping and training that a church should do and develop a philosophy of ministry that may be different than the Church. However, there is a movement afoot to bring ministry training back into the context of the local church. We will see how much opposition the Church will get. Probably of the three types of parachurch ministries, the “extra-para” is the most concerning and the most likely to try to supplant the Church’s primary place for ministry.
 
If the parachurch is truly “coming along side” of the Church to help the Church fulfill its task of evangelizing and discipling the world – then the way a parachurch operates and functions should reflect that purpose. Next time I will share what we can do to try to get the church back on top of the ministry food ladder.

Para-Church – where is it in the Bible? It’s not!!!
Good – now I have your attention!!! As you can see, this is not an easy issue – especially if you have been ministered to in a significant way by  a parachurch ministry of which  you have a sense of appreciation and loyalty. It is emotional, because you have friends who have been significantly touched by Christ through the ministries. I realize that and acknowledge that God has used many of these ministries or at least the gospel that has been preached by these organizations. I think the best place to start this discussion is to affirm what we know about the church and its role as God’s primary agent for the gospel and the Great commission. And ask the question – “is there any Biblical basis for a parachurch ministry?” Let’s look at some nodal passages that confirm the church preeminence when viewing ministry.
 
Matthew 16:13-18 (NASB95)Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.“I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.

Jesus is describing something that has not been birthed yet – The Church! The church (Gk. Ecclesia) is the called out ones of God. Jesus makes it clear that this Church will be able to stand up against Satan and his attacks.
 
Matthew 18:15-17 (NASB95) “If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.“But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed.“If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

Again Jesus is describing the importance of the church when restoring a sinning, unrepentant believer. The church is not even formed yet, but Christ gives a vision of how the church will be crucial in the sanctifying work in believers’ lives.
 
 Matthew 28:19-20 (NASB95)“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit ,teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

The question is “who did Jesus give the Great Commission to?” The answer is “the church” – the apostles are not just given a mandate to evangelize, but better to make disciples. That commissioning is the charter for the church, God’s disciple making agent.
 
Acts 2:41-47 (NASB95)So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common;and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart,praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.

This is the church’s birthday. Peter preached, the Holy Spirit convicted and the born again people of God joined together to fulfill some specific activities. These are the main programmatic aspects of a church’s ministry. It also serves as a description of what a true church looks like.
 
Acts 5:11-14 (NASB95) And great fear came over the whole church, and over all who heard of these things.At the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were taking place among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s portico.But none of the rest dared to associate with them; however, the people held them in high esteem.And all the more believers in the Lord, multitudes of men and women, were constantly added to their number.

Look what happens on the heels of the church’s first discipline – Ananias and Sapphirra – the church continued to grow. The church was fulfilling its ecclesiastical duty of keeping believers accountable and dispensing discipline. This is not the job of any other organization but the church. You will also notice that this points out the importance of the “local, visible church.” Throughout the New Testament there is a 4 to 1 mentioning of the local church over “universal church” principles. That was the focal point throughout Acts and the epistles.
 
Acts 9:31 (NASB95)So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, being built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it continued to increase.

When Luke continues his narrative of the expansion of Christianity, it is always in the context of the church and what it was doing. There was no other legitimate form of ministry except the church. The focus of the apostles and first century church was to “build the church.”
 
Acts 14:23-27 (NASB95)When they had appointed elders for them in every church, having prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.They passed through Pisidia and came into Pamphylia.When they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.From there they sailed to Antioch, from which they had been commended to the grace of God for the work that they had accomplished.When they had arrived and gathered the church together, they began to report all things that God had done with them and how He had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.

As Paul took his ministry on the road through missionary activity, he was fixed on starting, growing and properly establishing local churches. By the way, Paul never looked at the church as a “universal, invisible, spiritual church” – he always talked about the church as a “local, personal, visible, identifiable, vitally connected and relating” church. One of the arguments used by parachurch proponents is that the “Church” is a lot bigger than a certain identifiable entity. It is true that we “belong to the universal church” but when explaining or forming actual ministry, it is always discussed in the context of a local ministry. We will discuss this further.
 
Ephesians 1:22-23 (NASB95)And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church,which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Paul states a powerful truth : Christ’s authority on earth has been given to the church. We are a representative of Christ and that the fullness of Christ is seen in the church. We are the Body of Christ. We are the Family of God with a specific right and role to fulfill God’s work in God’s way and to multiply God’s church.
 
Ephesians 3:10 (NASB95)So that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places.

The church is where we will learn the gospel, and that through the church,  God’s truth will be revealed to the world. The gospel was given to the Church; for the church; with the intention that the church would make it known to the earth!
 
1 Timothy 3:15 (NASB95)But in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.

Paul re-affirms that the church is the “pillar and support” of the truth. It is the Church that is the “platform and display case” of the Word of God. What a responsibility. Again the word “church” is not anyone who is a Christian – there is a definite and defined entity that is an organism and organization with precise specifications. In addition, you can look for eternity and you will not find one mention of any other ministry organization in the scriptures other than the church. The term and concept of the Parachurch was made up in the last 60 years. So if we are going to spend our time and energy developing and growing any ministry it better be the church! The next entry – are all parachurch ministries the same?

Para-Church or Para-site – Is there a difference?
Many are not going to like what I am about to say! Our next “declining moment in the church” has to do with the rise and prominence of parachurch ministries and their need to defer back to the church as God’s primary agent of grace in this age. In addition, the parachurch’s failure to properly support the efforts of the church and even take away the glory of the church by some of its actions. There I said it!!!
 
I don’t aspire to be controversial. I think that the real problem is that Christians have been getting more and more used  to accepting error and so when I come along and point it out – people get upset with  me! They lack ecclesiastical discernment and so when I share a clear principle from scripture, I am the one who is wrong! So they shoot the messenger because they dare not grapple with the message! Instead of being able to discern error,  many in the church and its leaders accept error as the “norm” – correction is seen as controversial. That dilemma reminds me of a pair of “EarthShoes” I owned in high school.
 
EarthShoes were the forerunners to Birkenstocks and the popular rubber clogs – Gators! They were funny looking, but very comfortable and they were the craze in the younger generation in the late 70’s! In the spring of my senior year, I bought a pair and the same week or so, injured my ankle playing softball. The ankle wasn’t broken nor in need of a cast – but to relieve my pain, I over-compensated  and  began to walk on the side of my foot. This caused me to wear out the shoe unequally. School ended, the warm weather hit and I changed my footwear to sneakers and flip flops for the summer. When the summer was over  I began wearing my EarthShoes again. The first time I wore them, they were extremely uncomfortable. The problem was that my ankle had healed up and I no longer needed to walk on the sides of my shoes – a matter of fact – it was painful to try walking in my unevenly worn shoes! I would tell people my plight and they would answer – “that doesn’t sound right – EarthShoes are always comfortable?” Not if you don’t use them right and wear them out by overcompensating your walk!
 
The lesson is simple – “if you do something wrong long enough that you become used to it, when you try to correct the incorrect usage – it will be painful!” Second lesson – if you try to point something out as being wrong after people have gotten used to it – there is something wrong with you!
 
For 40 plus years, evangelical Christianity has been walking on the sides of its shoes when it comes to doing ministry – overcompensating its failures by leaning on parachurch ministries instead of relying on the church. It overcompensated by empowering and debutizing the parachurch ministries as the torch bearer of the great commission because the church was broken and not faithful in carrying out it’s duty to fulfill God’s work on earth. So what did it do?  It started walking on the sides of its feet – turning over its authority and ministry leadership – and now it’s painful to correct. We have gotten so used to walking on the side of our ministry shoe leather, to correct it or even suggest that we are walking incorrectly causes all kinds of emotional, intellectual and experiential pain! And to correct it we must make some significant steps of change – for some we will need to change our shoes – throw out the old pair of unequally worn EarthShoes.
 
The worn shoes I am describing is known as “Para-church ministries.” The phrase “para-church” means to come along side of; just like the Holy Spirit is called the “para clete” – the Holy Comforter who comes along side of a believer. These are organizations and ministries, that are NOT the church, but wanted to “come along side” of the church and help the Church fulfill it’s task of reaching and discipling the world for Christ’s sake. They were very good at what they did; combined with the church’s lack of ministry passion the parachurch ministries began to take a significant place in evangelicalism and in some respects supplanted the church!
 
Para church ministries vary from mission boards and agencies; youth organizations like Youth for Christ and Young Life; camps, publishing companies, counseling services and specialized teaching ministries, like Walk thru the Bible. There are evangelistic ministries like Prison Fellowship and the Navigators which focus their efforts on one select group of people, namely prisoners and servicemen and women. There are training organizations; educational and theological schools that all fall into the category of a parachurch. Again most started with a good intention or because the church was not doing what it needed to do and an opportunity for ministry had presented itself. The problem is that over time these parachurch agencies, which were originally to just “come along side” of the Church, in reality supplanted the church’s authority, primacy and in some cases “took the place of the church” in direct roles of evangelism and discipleship as stated in Matthew 28:19, 20 and the Great Commission. What was supposed to be “the tail of the dog” is now wagging the dog!!
 
So how are we to approach this issue? How are we to discern the validity of the issue or the conflict concerning parachurch ministries? Are we saying that all parachurch ministries are sinful and we should have nothing to do with them? Have we not seen God do some amazing things through some of these ministries? Hey Pastor Jamie – don’t you serve with Walk thru the Bible and teach at Lancaster Bible College – it sounds like you are saying that these organizations are “walking wrong” when it comes to doing ministry? Are you suggesting that we just fellowship with our church and have no contact with ministries outside of NewSong? What about a collection of churches that work together – isn’t that a “parachurch” organization?
 
As you can see this is an involved and complicated discussion. It will take a number of blog entries to handle this topic. So here‘s what I want you to do….take a few minutes and think through the issue of the parachurch. Can you think of any parachurch ministries that come to your mind? Ask this question – “If they did not exist would the Christian community really miss it? Could the church handle its responsibilities? How is that organization possibly hurting the church? Now run that through your mind. Next time we are going to consider all the scripture that identifies the church as God’s primary agent of the gospel and why, when we consider the church, it should be in the visible and local and not as “universal and invisible.”
Deep in the soul of our nation is an understanding that God exists and that He was instrumental in the founding and sustaining of our great country. I am not boasting of being a "Christian Nation" or that God has a special place in His heart for America -- any bible teacher knows that only Israel is God's chosen people!  However, throughout our history there has been an unusual respect for the God's sovereignty and power and a holy fear towards the righteousness of God. This was never so clear then when our nation was about to launch the invasion at Normandy Beach on what was known as D-Day. Hours after the launch of that "make or break" operation -- President Roosevelt took to the radio air and lead our country in a prayer.  Yes friends, the President of the USA "leading the country in prayer to the Almighty." Where is the ACLU when you need them?? On this 54th anniversary of that incredible event, I offer FDR's D-Day prayer as a model of how to face an enemy and war and how to stand for righteousness and freedom. May every politician read it and come under conviction.  May every citizen read it and thank God that FDR prayed it. May our clear and present enemies recognize that the God whom one nation called upon in its most dire moment, is the same god we can go to and ask Him to act on our behalf.

June 6, 1944
My fellow Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far.
And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer:
Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity.
Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith.
They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph.
They will be sore tried, by night and by day, without rest-until the victory is won. The darkness will be rent by noise and flame. Men's souls will be shaken with the violences of war.
For these men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate. Many people have urged that I call the Nation into a single day of special prayer. But because the road is long and the desire is great, I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer. As we rise to each new day, and again when each day is spent, let words of prayer be on our lips, invoking Thy help to our efforts.
Give us strength, too -- strength in our daily tasks, to redouble the contributions we make in the physical and the material support of our armed forces.
And let our hearts be stout, to wait out the long travail, to bear sorrows that may come, to impart our courage unto our sons wheresoever they may be.
And, O Lord, give us Faith. Give us Faith in Thee; Faith in our sons; Faith in each other; Faith in our united crusade. Let not the keenness of our spirit ever be dulled. Let not the impacts of temporary events, of temporal matters of but fleeting moment let not these deter us in our unconquerable purpose.
With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy. Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial arrogancies. Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our sister Nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace a peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men. And a peace that will let all of men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil.
Thy will be done, Almighty God.

Living Waters Church

On the church’s web site it says this… “Living Waters Church was started in July 2000 with 15 adults led by Pastor Jody Sambrick…. it was always his passion to see lives changed through a relationship with Jesus Christ. He dreamed of a church that would be culturally relevant in its music and message so that people who did not grow up in church could feel comfortable coming and meeting God and a loving church family. “  I witnessed some of the vision for the church this past Sunday when I visited Living Waters at their temporary home of Lancaster Christian School gym at 9AM.  There is a couple of words that best describes this visit.  First is “casual” – everything about the experience speaks of informal. How people are dressed; how the service begins; the aura of the morning and even components of the service.  The second word – “coffee” – in all their literature they make the point that they serve Starbucks and you can drink some “java’ while the service is happening. I was surprised to see attenders get up during worship and just before the message began and get a refill. Third word – “contemporary” – obviously in regards to music. They have a four piece rhythm section and a couple of singers. Mostly new choruses, even though one of the songs was completely new to me and so fast that I could never “catch up” with the lead singer/guitarist. “Congratulation” is the fourth word – they honored their graduates in the service. The director of ministries handled the honoring. She donned a cap and gown and presented each grad with a gift. One nice touch was honoring older grads and grads who received their master’s and doctorate. I ran out of “c” words for the last observation – which has to do with the message. The message was the fifth in a series on the ten commandments and was entitled “Honoring My Parents.” LWC is a “Purpose-Driven-Saddleback” clone in every way – even with the message series. Maybe a final word is “Copy.” I am 95% sure that the sermon was one of Warren’s messages - if not a close copy. The sermon was read by the director of ministries, Jane Dutton. She was a good communicator but not a Biblical preacher. She referred to the proof texts in Warrenian usage of the Bible in a sermon (he uses many various translations to justify his points – not exegesis of a text). The talk was good for listeners who know nothing about the Bible and to encourage them to love their parents without being authoritative and convicting calling them to obedience.  But growing Christians will find it hard to sustain their faith on that kind of preaching. In addition, she never really connected the message to where the idea came from – the Law! I am sorry that I missed the Pastor. It would probably be different if the main guy was there!

Lancaster Alliance Church

LAC has been a strong church presence in the county for a couple of decades. A few years ago their long time pastor moved to the Midwest and a missionary took over the pulpit. His health forced him to leave after two years and the church has had an interim pastor for the past three years. This lack of stability must have a strain on a church family. I visited on “Children’s Sunday” where they honored their kids and those who minister to them. I have to give LAC the “friendliest church award” (at this point in my church visit tour). A number of people extended themselves and said hello. The service began with having all the kids come to the front of the stage and they used CD music to lead in worship. The songs were geared for the kids, probably songs they sing in Children’s Church and I thought was a nice touch. If you are showcasing the kids – do kid’s music! Pastor Doug, the Children’s Pastor, then came and honored all the workers. It was excellent – he had all their names on the video screen and exampled all the different aspects of the children’s ministry. This is a high value and highly programmed aspect of the church. The interim pastor then came and preached a message entitled “Bless Our Children’s Workers.” He looked at three passages in the gospel of John to discover what terms Jesus might use to describe a children’s worker – specifically – “teacher, shepherd, and model.” It was a nice, simple, and encouraging message. Again, like many of these visits, I have only experienced one true expositional message. However, this was a special day and it is very difficult to prepare a message for these occasions, but still a single passage and real expositing could take place! The service concluded with communion, which seemed out of place with the special focus of the morning, but it was the first Sunday of the month which is traditionally when the Lord’s Supper is experienced. Talking about traditional, that is one thing I observed which I appreciated. There were a number of older believers in attendance and many dressed with what we might call “Sunday-go-to-church-attire.” I really thought it demonstrated a mature look to the visit. This is where my bias comes out.  All that said, the communion was personally encouraging. There was not much instruction or direction given. I opened my Bible; read a Psalm and spent time personally worshipping the Lord. I am starting to feel the affects of not receiving regular times of worship, fellowship, and Bible teaching!
