November 2007 Entries
Dick Cheney was taken into George Washington Unv. Hospital and given a heart shock and SO WAS I!!  What a way to contect with your VP. I had a cardioaversion on Tuesday and praise the Lord it worked.  My heart "converted" (for the second time - first time in Christ) and went back into a normal sinus rhythm. I learned from the nurse this morning that they hit me with 350 volts of electricity. You can get anywhere from 200-400 -- i was on the high side because of my size --- likely excuse -- word on the street is that some fellow pastors paid the cath lab nurse $50 bucks to give me an extra shot!! In all seriousness, it was a real experience -- never felt a thing and to be honest I don't feel different eventhough they say my heart is now operating much more effectively. Now its back to the gym, keep losing weight and this time next year I will be ready for a marathon (only kidding!). Big shout out to the best nurses in the world...Jan, Deb, Allyssa, Veronica, Chin, Kayla, Tina and Dr. M.... great job! thanks
I am still in the hospital and waiting!  I am spending three days in LGH to be put on the medicine TEKOSYN.  This drug helps slow down the heart and convert any A-Fib that may occur. While I am working on my computer and watch FOX News at the same time...I see an alert -- VP Cheney being rushed to the hospital for A-Fb and a serious irregular heart beat. I feel special!
The Church of the Lord Jesus is the ekklesiathe called out ones of Christ. The Church is a community of born-again believers committed to worship, learn, serve, fellowship and pray together until every person is complete in Christ. The following are the Biblical descriptions of what the church is supposed to be like.

1.      It was given the task of fulfilling the Great Commission.
Matthew 28:19-20 (NASB95)
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Mark 16:15-16 (NASB95)
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
16 “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.
Acts 1:8 (NASB95)
8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

2.      It has spiritual authority against evil.
Matthew 16:17-18 (NASB95)
17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
18 “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.

3.      It is not an option for believers.
Hebrews 10:23-25 (NASB95)
23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful;
24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds,
25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

4.      It is held together through unity.
Ephesians 4:2-6 (NASB95)
2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love,
3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling;
5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

5.  It is watched by Jesus constantly.
Revelation 1:12-18 (NASB95)
12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands;
13 and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His chest with a golden sash.
14 His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire.
15 His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters.
16 In His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword; and His face was like the sun shining in its strength.
17 When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last,
18 and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades.

6.      It has sanctifying power.
Matthew 18:15-20 (NASB95)
15 “If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.
16 “But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed.
17 “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
18 “Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.
19 “Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.
20 “For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”
1 Corinthians 5:11-13 (NASB95)
11 But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler—not even to eat with such a one.
12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church?
13 But those who are outside, God judges. Remove the wicked man from among yourselves.
1 Peter 4:17 (NASB95)
17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?

7.      It is the protector of doctrinal soundness.
1 Timothy 3:15 (NASB95)
15 but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.
Titus 1:9-14 (NASB95)
9 holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
10 For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,
11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain.
12 One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”
13 This testimony is true. For this reason reprove them severely so that they may be sound in the faith,
14 not paying attention to Jewish myths and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.

8.      It has all the gifts and talents to function effectively.
Romans 12:4-5 (NASB95)
4 For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function,
5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
1 Corinthians 12:12-14 (NASB95)
12 For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.
13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
14 For the body is not one member, but many.

9.      It is given resources by God for kingdom impact.
Philippians 4:15-16 (NASB95)
15 You yourselves also know, Philippians, that at the first preaching of the gospel, after I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving but you alone;
16 for even in Thessalonica you sent a gift more than once for my needs.
Acts 2:44-45 (NASB95)
44 And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common;
45 and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.

10. It is the visible expression of Jesus on the earth.
Ephesians 1:22-23 (NASB95)
22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church,
23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
1 Peter 2:11-12 (NASB95)
11 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul.
12 Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.
Matthew 5:16 (NASB95)
16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

11. It is not limited to a specific geography/nationality.
Ephesians 2:11-16 (NASB95)
11 Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “Uncircumcision” by the so-called “Circumcision,” which is performed in the flesh by human hands—
12 remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
14 For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall,
15 by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace,
16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity.
Galatians 3:27-28 (NASB95)
27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

12. It has healing power.
James 5:14-15 (NASB95)
14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;
15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.

13. It is lead by spiritually qualified men, Elders, who together lead with humility and servanthood.
1 Timothy 3:1-7 (NASB95)
1 It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do.
2 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
3 not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money.
4 He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity
5 (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?),
6 and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil.
7 And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
Philippians 1:1 (NASB95)
1 Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons:

14. It regularly practices ordinances as commanded by Christ (ie. baptism; communion and discipline)
Matthew 28:19 (NASB95)
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (NASB95)
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
2 Thessalonians 3:14-15 (NASB95)
14 If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of that person and do not associate with him, so that he will be put to shame.
15 Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother
Galatians 6:1-2 (NASB95)
1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.

15. It will be evaluated and judged by Jesus.
2 Timothy 4:1 (NASB95)
1 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom:
Acts 10:40-42 (NASB95)
40 “God raised Him up on the third day and granted that He become visible,
41 not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen beforehand by God, that is, to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead.
42 “And He ordered us to preach to the people, and solemnly to testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead.

16. It will be delivered from the earth by Christ.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 (NASB95)
13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope.
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.
15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.
16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.

17. It is loved by Christ.
Ephesians 5:23-27 (NASB95)
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.
24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,
26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,
27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.

18. It is a place to practice the worship that will be done through eternity.
Romans 12:1 (NASB95)
1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
Revelation 5:11-13 (NASB95)
11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands,
12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.”
13 And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.”

I have to remember that my blog is not a duty to perform, but a "conversation with those who log on!" I can't help feeling guilty when I get so busy and i am away from my computer that i don't get to keep current with life.  It has been three weeks since I did any newsy kind of blogging -- so I am giving you a tour de life to catch up!

I have been super busy with sermon preparation over the past month. With being away at Williamsburg, extra counseling, end of the year meetings and holidays -- I have had to do a alot of prep on the run!  i hate that.  I like working a little bit each day and then have a solid eight hours on Thursday to finish the manuscript. Dare - thanksgiving is Thursday AGAIN!

We had another baptism at NewSong. I don't know any event that gets spiritual attack more than when we go to baptize people. Between fear, physical struggles or family pressures -- our candidates really go through the crucible!

Pastor Jerry and Robyn Lingenfelter got word that their baby (they are due in March) has a heart defect. The Lingy Baby will have surgery immediately after birth and it is all correctable! They are so grateful for a "mistaken read" sonogram. It flagged the baby and a specialist picked up the problem.

Kris, Alex and I went down to NC for a quick visit with my sister and her family for Turkey Day. Agony...9 1/2 hours on the way down. Two hours inbetween Baltimore and DC -- not fun! Blessing - seeing the fam, going to a Hurricane hockey game and playing 18-holes of golf. Any time you get to swing the sticks past November is a blessing!

I am writing this blog from a hospital room....don't panic -- I am going on a different drug to correct an irregular heart beat and you have to have six doses in the hospital before letting you go home.  the drug - tekosyn -- is so expensive and rare that they mail it to you at home! CRAZY! Here is some fun news....if the heart doesn't "convert" -- no joke that is the word they use -- by Tuesday afternoon -- I will have a cardiac aversion. In laymen terms...they will shock my heart with 200-340 volts of current....ssswwweeeetttttt!  You thought my hair was wild before!!

Politics is starting to heat up...especially in conversations with other believers.  People ask me - so who are you voting for? Obviously anyone but Hillary!  But that leaves Christians with an ethical dillemma....do we vote for Rudy...Fred...Mitt -- even if they don't fully believe like we do?  And is a vote for Huck really making a difference? Basically, for the primaries - I am for HUCK. There are things I don't agree with him, specifically his spending and very loose fiscal policies. However I like everything else about him....plus he is the best stand up speaker of the bunch! In a perfect world, if Huck could ever convince a democrat like Joe Lieberman to be his VP -- we could do some damage in the general election. But there is a second question -- who can beat Hillary? One name has a shot - RUDY!  I am afraid that believers will have to swallow hard in November '08 and vote for someone they are not fully supportive of!

Last bit of news -- looks like the Yankees will be back in full force for 2008....A-Rod is signed...MO is ready to pitch...Posada is behind the plate....now they have to sign Johann Santana and all my Christmas wish list will be completed!

That's all for now!  PJM

Paul tells us that the gospel is “Christ crucified, buried and risen again…” that brings us to the sixth point in the gospel from Acts 10…..

6.      The Gospel proclaims that Jesus rose from the dead and was seen by many witnesses. – 40-41

40 “God raised Him up on the third day and granted that He become visible,
41 not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen beforehand by God, that is, to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead.

Death of Christ paid the penalty for sin but His resurrection from the dead, gave us the ability for victory over sin and death. An unsaved person needs to realize why Easter is so important and why we celebrate the day – a Risen Christ gives us power over death and the power for eternal life. Paul’s great treatise on the resurrection….1 Corinthians 15 gives us great insights on the resurrection.
1 Corinthians 15:21-22 (NASB95)
21 For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead.
22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.

1 Corinthians 15:54-57 (NASB95)
54 But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “Death is swallowed up in victory.
55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law;
57 but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

The resurrection determines the validity of the Christian faith. Paul exclaimed, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins” (1 Cor. 15:17). Resurrection was the guarantee of the Father’s acceptance of the Son’s work.  The resurrection indicated that the work of the cross was completed. Christ prayed that the cup would pass from Him (Matt. 26:39); it was a prayer not for the avoidance of the cross but for death to issue in life through the resurrection (Ps. 16:10). The Father heard the prayer (Heb. 5:7) and raised the Son from the dead, indicating His acceptance of Christ’s work.
It fulfilled the prophecies concerning His resurrection.

David prophesied of Christ’s resurrection (Psalm 16:10); Peter indicated the resurrection of Christ fulfilled the prophecy of Psalm 16:10. Christ Himself predicted not only His death but also His resurrection (Matt. 16:21; Mark 14:28). Peter tells Cornelius that the resurrection was also confirmed by those who saw a risen Christ – giving the gospel greater validity.

Who were some of the witnesses?
The resurrected Lord was seen by many people in the forty days that followed.
Among them were the faithful women at the tomb, the two on the Emmaus road, Peter – when he went to the tomb…The Twelve….when Thomas doubted…five hundred believers at one time, James, the apostles, (Matt. 28:1–10; Luke 24:13–35;)… Paul  (1 Cor. 15:5–8).
Those witnesses were an important testimony to the veracity of the resurrection. Post-ascension appearances of the Lord Jesus to Paul and John are recorded in Acts and Revelation. When you preach the gospel there must be the cross and then there must be a resurrection – it is what makes Jesus distinct. Resurrected Jesus gives us NEW LIFE – and witnesses give validity to the resurrection.

Clarity is not our enemy!  There is real truth to that statement -- especially when discussing what the gospel is.  As we continue to look at the anatomy of the gloriour glospel, we come to the fifth point as seen from Acts 10.....

5.      The Gospel points us to the Cross.
Acts 10:39 “We are witnesses of all the things He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They also put Him to death by hanging Him on a cross.

You cannot understand the gospel or should I say that you are not preaching the true gospel without pointing to the cross. The cross is a place of punishment of sins and transgressions. But if Jesus is God and therefore without sin, then his death on the cross had to be for another reason other then for himself. He did not need to die for His sin – He had none! Jesus died on the Cross as a substitute for sinners. He died in our place – because someone has to die for sin. Paul makes it clear – our need for the cross is because of the payment needed for our sin.

Rom 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death….”

There are many passages that emphasize Christ’s substitutionary atonement in the place of mankind.
Christ was a substitute in being made sin for others (2 Cor. 5:21);
He bore the sins of others in His body on the cross (1 Pet. 2:24);
He suffered once to bear the sins of others (Heb. 9:28);
He experienced horrible suffering, scourging, and death in place of sinners (Isa. 53:4–6).

When we share a verbal witness we have to point people to the cross – it is where our sins were crucified and the penalty for our sin was paid. No matter how prideful or how deluded we maybe about the seriousness of our sins in God’s economy – no one can dispute the sacrifice it took for Jesus Christ to go to the cross on our behalf – it is incomprehensible!

That is why the “Passion of the Christ” was so moving – we saw in living color what it was like to go to the cross. When people fully capture in there minds what the cross meant – they will understand the value of the gift Christ provides. They will also begin to understand – that they could not go through what He went through – and it should strike terror in the hearts of any sinner. Some today want to preach a gospel with the horror of the cross – I say you have no gospel without a clear understanding of the cross!!!

Well Yankee fans - we are one month into the off season and we are in wheeling dealing mode.  Lets talk about where we are with 5 months until spring training!

1. There is a NEW Joe in town!  I am thrilled with the selection of Joe Giradi as the new skipper.  I love Donnie-baseball and have always felt bad for him never seeing World Series action in his time as a Yank or as a coach!  Nevertheless, we needed a strategic person had the helm and Joe is the man.  Not to  mention he is a fabulous Christian who is not afaird to stand up for the Lord.

2. Hip Hip Jorge! Jorge Posada was signed yesterday -- fantastic.  With this bullpen filled with young pitching talent, we need the steady veteran running the battery. With him and the Skipper a former catcher, Joba, Hughes and company are going to do damage next year!

3. LET'S GO MO!  MAriano Rivera is going shopping this week but i hope he will sign the deal and finish his career with the Bronx Bombers.  No Mo is a problem. Joba is good but he is a year or two away from making a big name as a closer, Mariano can really model and shape him!

4. Go after Caberra!  The next big move is to land Caberra the Marlins thirdbaseman.  He can play the position, he wants to play in NY and he can hit a solid .300. Open the check book!

5. Finally, Go after Johann Santana!  Here is a true marque pitcher.  He could guarentee you 20 wins.  He is the kind of guy that could stop any two or three game losing streak and turn a team around. Petitte is great and we need him, but he is pass the prime of counting on him for a win each time out. Santana could be a gold mine!

That's all for today....Yankee Nation is alive and well.  More to come....

Let me continue my study on what the gospel is from Acts 10. We have already said that the gospel is for any person who comes to faith in Christ, it will produce the righteousness needed to get back with God and it provides man with peace with God. We pick up with number four….

4.      The Gospel presents the Life of Christ. – 37-39
37 you yourselves know the thing which took place throughout all Judea, starting from Galilee, after the baptism which John proclaimed.
38 “You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
39 “We are witnesses of all the things He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They also put Him to death by hanging Him on a cross.

Peter reminds Cornelius of what he knew about Jesus….Jesus was baptized by John. It is important to realize that John’s baptism was not the same as a NT baptism – it had its roots in the OT purification baptism. Specifically when a Gentile would become a Jew – they would have to be baptized. For Jews to be baptized in that matter was an amazing act -- seeing that most Jews hated Gentiles – but Jesus loved Jew and Gentile alike. He identified with all men. Peter also said that…”The Holy Spirit anointed Him…” Look at what the gospels says about that event….
Matthew 3:16-17 (NASB95)
16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,
17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
After His baptism, people witnessed a supernatural event take place – the Spirit of God descending upon Jesus giving another evidence that he was NO ORDINARY MAN!
The Peter told Cornelius….“Doing good and healing many” - Jesus did miracles and acted divinely…..because He was divine….He was God!

Finally Peter declares that…. “God was with Him” – God was not just WITH Jesus – Jesus is God. Why bring up all these events in the Life of Christ….is it important to the gospel?
Answer is YES – to fully understand the significance of the gospel you must understand that Jesus is GOD and to review his life it certainly affirms that fact in the Deity of Christ.
Jesus is not just a great teacher, a miracle worker, a prophet – He was God in the flesh.
This is crucial because the gospel will have eternal implication. For when Christ died for sins – He died for all sins, of all time. And he provides atonement for sins ETERNALLY.
He would forgive sins – past, present and future – his forgiveness would be eternal and universe – because of his deity. That is why we call him the “Lamb of God” sacrificed for us – a normal lamb would only “cover sins” up to that moment…..temporal and limited atonement! The Lamb of God would die “once and for all” – saving man from sin – from the beginning of time. Why is Jesus being God important? Because his death and atonement – is universal, unlimited and complete! That can only be accomplished by an eternal God.
I am preaching on becoming “Great” commission followers of Christ on Sundays. Obviously being committed to fulfill the Great Commission mean that we are devoted to the church. The church can become a stale institution and completely ineffective if we forget how God see the church. These next few weeks I will be looking at four names that the Bible calls the church. Last week I spoke on the church as the Household of God – simply we are a family. What makes understanding this metaphor is the condition of the family today and how dysfunctional it has become. In the same way the church as suffered from it own levels of abuse, neglect, division and abandonment. However when the church truly functions like a family and begins to care for each person as a fellow sibling, the church becomes priceless! This summer I heard this song while visiting a church. It is kind of “chessy” as our worship pastor might label it. But the word reflects what role the church should have in our life and how important the family of God should be!
I need you, you need me.
We're all a part of God's body.
Stand with me, agree with me.
We're all a part of God's body.
It is his will that every need be supplied.
You are important to me, I need you to survive.
You are important to me, I need you to survive.

I need you, you need me.
We're all a part of God's body.
Stand with me, agree with me.
We're all a part of God's body.
It is his will that every need be supplied.
You are important to me, I need you to survive.
You are important to me, I need you to survive.

I pray for you , you pray for me.
I love you, I need you to survive.
I won't harm you with words from my mouth.
I love you, I need you to survive.

It is his will, that every need be supplied.
You are important to me, I need you to survive.
This fall I am doing a series of message on living out the Great Commission. From developing a relationship with lost people to helping grow up that lost person into a multiplying follower of Christ. This past week I spoke on sharing a verbal witness – or simply preaching the gospel. There is such confusion on what the gospel is and worst a watering down so that people think they are coming to faith in Christ but that have been misrepresented. Over the next few blog entries I want to give you the points from my message. The text is Acts 10:34-42 – it is the story of where Peter goes to Cornelius the gentile and shares the facts of the gospel. There were ten truths that Peter shared. How we communicate is a matter of style and presentation. I am more concerned with WHAT we share – that is a matter of substance. I hope this will encourage and motivate you to give a verbal witness….

1.      The Gospel is for any person who comes to faith in Christ –34
34 Opening his mouth, Peter said: “I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality, but in every nation….

Salvation does not occur from the right pedigree, religious background or the type of church you attended. Salvation is not exclusive but affects all who hears and believes in the gospel.
Peter is specifically commenting on the non-partiality nature of the gospel because he is realizing that it is for all men – even Gentiles. But conversely there is a realization that salvation is not limited to Jews – or that the Jews have a special in with God. The gospel can save any person – it is not based on standing or personage or ethnicity. This means that the gospel can be heard by all people and that all people can respond to it and be saved.  But that also means that Salvation is not automatic. This is also a good reminder that we must not ASSUME that all people are true believers. Peter is realizing that being right with God happens when a person trusts in the gospel and not because of the side of the tracks they come from.ILL: Young people who attend NewSong….its not automatic. You must come to personal faith in Christ by acceptance of the gospel. Close proximity and association – like hanging around a church or having parents who were Christians - doesn’t provide salvation. ONLY  ACCEPTING THE GOSPEL CAN! ILL: A number of years ago we were in London as a family and took a tour of Westminster Abbey – Alex got to sit in the seat reserved for the Monarch – King/Queens seat – it did not make him royalty…..being around the gospel does not mean you are a Christian!

2.      The Gospel will produce the righteousness needed to get back with God. – 35
35 but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right is welcome to Him.

The phrase “welcome to him” – suggests that before salvation we are not welcomed to God.
Why do we need the gospel and salvation? Because we are separated from God – we are no longer welcomed into fellowship with Him. We are not welcomed in God’s presence. We are UNACCEPTABLE TO GOD! It has not always been that way….Genesis 1 tells us that when God created man – we were in perfect relationship with God. He created us to be with us. We were created to fellowship and worship God. We were able to do that because we were without sin. But then Adam and Eve fell and God threw them out of the Garden and sin separated the Creator from his creation – mankind! Without the gospel we are eternally separated from God. Our depravity has caused a great chasm between us and God.
We are not righteous by any means OF OUR OWN and if we try to be righteous – it is never enough…..THAT IS CALLED INFUSED RIGHTEOUSNESS. We are not reverent towards God – we can not worship Him in our sinful state. We can not muster up enough righteousness that he would want to be in fellowship with us. But when we hear and accept the good news of the gospel and we are redeemed out of our sin and completely eradicating our sin – God gives us his righteousness. THAT IS CALLED IMPUTED RIGHTESOUSNESS. Paul explains this essential doctrine in Romans 5:12-21.

12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinner….

17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.
19 For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.
20 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The gospel brings the righteousness needed to be reinstated in fellowship and worship with God. Without God’s righteousness – we are NOT RIGHT with God and unacceptable.
Isn’t that unloving for God not to accept us? Isn’t that elitist for God to expect that kind of righteousness? That means without His righteousness no one will be aceptable to God? Where is God’s love?? His love hung on a cross to provide the way for his righteousness to be given to us as a free gift!

3.      The Gospel provides man with peace with God. – 36
36 “The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ…..

Peter says that the Sons of Israel received a message of peace through Christ.
What peace? Why did they need peace? Why do any of us need peace? How does the gospel provide peace? The Apostle Paul helps us with this…Romans 5:8-10

8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

Before the salvation we were at enmity with God – we were His enemy. We also were set to receive the wrath of God. We were part of the kingdom of darkness…..NOT Citizen’s of Heaven!! But through Jesus Christ and when we received the gospel – we were reconciled with God. RECONCILED – is an accounting term which means…to pay the debt….no longer a debtor!  When I have been at odds with anyone relationally – I owe a debt to someone…there is NO peace. There is usually a pit in your stomach – it is the absence of peace that drives us to resolve the conflict…..to reconcile is when are they going to call for the debt to be PAID! We have a debt of sin….I COULD NOT PAY!!! I AM MORALLY AND SPIRITUALLY bankrupt! That is why we call the gospel –the gospel of peace….ministry of reconciliation….helping people discover how to have the debt paid and peace given! That is what people need – PEACE. In our sin we are wrought with guilt, shame, hopelessness, no assurance of eternity. If people would be honest and they would take a hard look at their spiritual condition – they would see the turmoil all around them. The gospel brings peace – a peace that passes all understanding.

I am learning that having a blog means that you need to have the next entry ready and that there is not time off for bloggers!  Well last week i was on vacation! I really took a break and that meant no blogging for a week or so!  After a frantic fall start up at NewSong, the new school year and catching up from sabbatical, Kris and I got away for a week at Historic Williamsburgh.  It was my first time and it was awesome!  Yes we toured Colonial sites -- but we rested...read...watched eight episodes of Law and order on a rainy day! We ate great food - thanks to our partners in crime Jerry and Melynda!!  But with all we did to catch up on rest, revitalization and renewal -- there was not time for wRiting (almost an aliterated thought!). So here is my thought on the matter....all of us need a week or at least of weekend every now and then of complete non-activity. Sleep in late...read for as .ong as you want....don't look at your watch....eat lunch when its dinner time...breakfast at lunch time...take a walk or don't take a walk!  Do nothing! Trust me -- for busy people -- nothing is a lot of work!  But the net result is you will be refreshed and your mind will work a lot better.  Now I am ready to blog away!
