February 2008 Entries
Well this is day three enjoying Gussie with us!  We have had a wonderful Lord's Day where she got to hear her favorite preacher in the world -- her Bubba!  Then yesterday Kris, Gussie and Bubba traveled up to Reading for an exciting day of shopping.  What deals we found at the JC Penney outlet store!  Then in the evening Gussie cooked up her famous chicken cutlet dinner -- fantastic!  Today she in hard at work in one of the office work stations editing my book on Jude. My original editor is missing!  Another story for another time, but with Gussie here it give me a great opportunity to have her working oon the manuscript.  She is fantastic at that kind of typing, reading and editting.  The fact is I would not have a HS dipolma today without Gussie help in typing and correcting term papers.  All things come back around!  JM

Back in 2005 I started writing weekly devotionals to our congregation. The very first one I did was from the book of James. Seeing that I am presently preaching through this tremendous book, I thought I would dig up this article and run it again...enjoy!

I love the Book of James. As a matter of fact, I think the next book study we do at NewSong will be through this practical and penetrating New Testament book. The only problem is that there are a number of troubling statements throughout the book that you have to deal with. One in particular is James 4:8, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” Wait a minute! When I came to Christ didn’t His work on the cross bridge the chasm of my sin and liberate me out of the camp of the condemned and place me into the fellowship of forgiven??  Doesn’t Paul say that I was once far from God but now I have been brought near to Him? (Eph. 2:13) Before my salvation I was at enmity with God, but now we are friends (Rom. 5) – so which is it James – am I near or far away from the Lord? The most definitive answer is BOTH!

The fact is that when we came to Christ, we were placed into Christ, and we were eternally connected to Him just as a man and wife who are married are connected to each other. But just like in a marriage relationship, we can “cleave to each other and become one flesh” and still be far away at times. It was cute to watch Brett in the office today – fresh off his honeymoon. He and Jamie spent seven wonderful days in Mexico – 24/7. Now he is at the church working and she at her job. They will meet up this evening for dinner. He might have a meeting at church. She probably will need to grocery shop. By the end of the day they will feel a little different – having been with each other around the clock for the last week.  Even though they are not around each other every waking (and non-waking) moment, they are still connected to each other. However, they might have to draw near to each other at times!

The drawing near that James is talking about is not about our position in Christ, but our present condition in Christ. It’s not about our standing with Christ, but the state of that relationship. Clearly James is telling us that at times as children of God we may find ourselves drifting away from the Lord. The passage assumes that it is a real possibility that at any given moment we could become distant from the Lord. The verse also makes it clear that drawing near to God is a voluntary action that you and I are to initiate. Also, it is up to us to make the first step toward God. There is a promise, that if we draw near to God, God will draw near to us and that is the place of true blessing and security.

So I guess the real issue today is to know how that drift might occur. James gives us indication with the rest of the verse, ”Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” We have to wash our hands, worship with our hearts and the Word must fill our heads! James says SIN certainly plays a part in us being away from the Lord. From the smallest of spiritual infractions to the major felonies of Biblical proportions – sin will certainly pull you away from the Lord. I used to work for Sears in the automotive department. One of the things I used to hate was getting oil on my hands – it hindered my grip. No matter how strong I might be, once I get oil or grease on my hands I can’t get a hold of anything. The same is true with God. Once the slippery nature of sin contaminates our hands we cannot grab hold of the Lord.

But a heart absent of worship will also cause a distance between you and your Savior. A worshipping heart occurs when you have totally devoted all of your affections on the Lord and not on other idols. Idolatry is not just when we bow before marble statues, but occurs when our heart’s affection is fixed on someone other than the Lord Jesus. James says that we should have a pure heart and a pure heart produces worship toward God. This was never so more evident then on Sunday during our communion service. As we corporately came around the table of the Lord and fixed our hearts on Him and His work on the Cross, worship filled our hearts and the sanctuary. It was one of the most awesome experiences, as the church together was drawing near! Do you feel distant today? Take a moment and begin singing unto the Lord and recapture a heart of worship.

Finally, we will feel away from the Lord if our head is not filled with His Word. James calls it double-mindedness, confusion or a lack of clarity in our thinking. When we are double-minded, it is easy to take our eyes off the Lord. Yet the fastest way to draw near to the Lord is to dive headlong into His Word. Sometimes we don’t “feel” like reading it, but the Psalmist tells us that it is the Word of God that brings us back to God (Ps. 119:76). It’s His Word that describes who God is and His works and reminds us what we are missing and why we need to draw near! In a moment, we can be drawn back with the Lord, just by hearing His voice through the Word of God. While in Africa I was out of communications with Kris and Alex for over a week. It was the single longest time I have ever gone without talking with them in 20 years of marriage. On day seven I became unglued and ended up weeping uncontrollably with Ed Bley (it was funny to watch the horror on Ed’s face seeing the Big Dog falling apart)! The day we came out of the bush we were able to make a two minute call home. Just hearing their voices for that short moment in time was all I needed to make it the rest of the trip (trust me Ed was glad as well!). You see, hearing their voices was what I needed to draw back to them. That’s what God’s Word will do for you – even if all you have is a two minute call!! As a matter of fact, after a while – two minutes will NOT be enough – you will want more!!! If you feel distant from God, pick up the Book and give Him a call!!

I am not one for quoting a lot of old dead guys, but I read something today concerning drawing near to God. St. Augustine said this way: "You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you." You and I were saved to stay near to the Lord. When we drift, we know that something is not right. We have to draw near. Not just on Sundays around a communion table, but at the dinner table, conference table or computer table!! Let’s draw near to Him and He will draw near to us!
She probably won't read this, but my sister and I have an incredibly wonderful relationship. Even though she is MUCH older then her baby Bubba -- we could have been been twins.  No one could be as lucky as Bubba to have a sister like Gussie.  Even the fun names we call each other speaks of the love and affection.  With all that I have been going through, Gussie has been facing her own trials and much in the same way -- handling it with grace and trust and integrity.  God is His grace, made it so Gussie is not working (she took an unexpected early retirement) and is coming up to be with her Bubba. What fun!! I only wish I could be a bit sicker so she would feel like she is doing her nurse Nightingale routine with greater meaning.  I think I got better fast just knowing she was coming to town! I am just glad in the midst of all the craziness -- Gussie can come and bring the joy and stability that she has done all my life. I am one blessed Bubba!! See ya soon Gussie!

A couple of weeks ago, before all of my personal distractions I promised the church i would post an entry concerning the scriptural proofs of geniune salvation.  For a long time, one of the baffling theological discussions has been - "how do you know whether you are truly saved?"  Nopw some would say -- you can not know -- "that is between God and the individual." Well I don't believe that, the Bible is replete with passages declaring that we can KNOW what is the condition of our faith. There seems to be a certainity in us identifying who is a true Christian.  Then you hit the dillemma of what are the marks...mostly those who take a stab at this issue end up listing out a series of legalistic extrenal marks that if we would be honest could be produced by moral, upright religious people.  A matter of fact a couple of centuries ago Jonathan Edwards devoted his work entitled - "Religious Affections" to the topic.  One of the best pieces of research done on the subject was tucked in the back of the MacArthur Study Bible. Johnny Mac put together two lists and a series of scriptures to help us think through the issue.  the first list was labeled -- "evidences that neither prove NOR disapprove one's faith."  I known it sounds non-committal, bt what that did was bring to light some of the erroneous ways we try to justify that we are saved.  That list is following.....

A. Visible Morality - outward righteous living
B. Intellectual Knowledge - have a handle of Biblical or theological information
C. Religious Involvement - go to church
D. Active Ministry - involved with service (Remember Jesus' famous words... "Depart from me..")
E. Conviction of Sin - feeling bad about doing something wrong...we all do esp. when we are caught!
F. Assurance - however we get that assurance
G. Time of Decision - date and place is not guarentee...
The second list was "sure fire" evidences from the scripture that ONLY true believers would manifest....here is the list with some attached scripture:
A. Love for God
PS 42:1-4 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng.

LK 10:27 He answered: " `Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'  and, `Love your neighbor as yourself. "

B. Repentance from Sin
PS 32:5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD"-- and you forgave the guilt of my sin.
RO 7:14-25 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me .I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

C. Genuine Humility
PS 51:16-17 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

JAS 4:6-9 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.

D. Devotion to God’s Glory
ISA 43:7 Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made."

JER 9:23-24 This is what the LORD says: "Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the LORD

1CO 10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

E. Continual Prayer
EPH 6:18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

PHP 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

1TI 2:1-4 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone--for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
F. Selfless Love
1JN 2:9-12 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him. I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.

1JN 3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death.

G. Separation from the World
1CO 2:12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.

1JN 2:15-17 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world.  The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

H. Spiritual Growth
EPH 4:11-16 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

1PE 2:2-3 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
I. Obedient Living
MT 7:21-23 "Not everyone who says to me, `Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, `Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, `I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

RO 16:25-26 Now to him who is able to establish you by my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all nations might believe and obey him--

J. Spirit Produced Character
Gal.5:16-24 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.             But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
I know that is a long entry -- but it is important to have it all so that you can take the time and reflect on the truths being presented.  The fact is -- "if you are lacking the true marks of a believer -- maybe its time to surrender to Christ and acknowledge your need for the Savior?"  If you can see those marks -- GROW IN HIM EVEN MORE!

Well I launched my new winter/spring preaching series on James last week. James is the NT books that explains the tests that God gives us to prove our faith is true and strengthens our faith!  One of the things i said to the congregation during my introduction message is "hold on to your seat God has a way for bringing trials and tests to make us apply what we are learning."  Now to be honest that admonition was for the church and not for me. Being a pastor is plenty enough of a trial and test. However on the Wednesday following that statement my doctor called to tell me a CAT scan that I had on Monday has revealed enlarged lymphnodes near my bronchitube and that in his words "we need to sort this out."

He immediately had me cancel my long awaited trip to Japan and vietnam. I started hearing words like lymphoma, tumor, hodgkin's and leukemea....unbelieveble!  I have to tell you, I am so glad i had already studied ahead to know how I ought to respond. I have to tell you a peace that is incomprehensible came over Kris and I.  God gave me a phrase... "either healing or heaven....i win with both!" We met with the doctor on Thursday, and he set out a course of action. Blood tests followed and appointments to a pulminary specialist was today. And i preached...

I have to say that I had a new power in the pulpit -- talking about suffering and trials with the reality of a potential life threatening health issue looming brings a new authenicity to one's preaching. The elders and many other in our church have started a whole new level of praying for me -- as I have for myself. I have one guy in the church who committed to fast and pray until today and the specialist.

God is giving me comfort daily....not answers but comfort.  Who is in church last week - the chief pathologist of Lancaster.  He didn't give me any answers but said that he would personally look at my biopsy-- wow!  Then Monday a long time - boyhood friend told me his wife deals with this kind of cancer if it is cancer -- "gather up the reports and fax it to us -- she will look them over!"  What a blessing!  Then my dear friend Pastor Les Ayars tells me that he has had a similar problem -- the disease that they think it is for 35 plus years!!  AWesome!!

Well went to Dr. Duke and he said that "if he was a betting man, he thinks it is Sarcoidosis, the inflammation and enlargiig of the lungs lymph nodes. Not fatal but a bother.  He is scheduling a biopsy to confirm it....put me on some inhaler to help calm things down.  My blood work was perfect -- thank you Lord. Now we wait!

"Consider it all JOY brethren went we encounter various trials!"  Only the Lord knows what I have -- I am still not out of the woods, knowing conclusively what I have.  But it doesn't matter -- I have the Lord and he is demonstrating each day that he is the one walking me through this trial. I only pray that as I face this test, I will be faithful and trust the Lord for my personal endurance and to inspire and encourage those in my congregation who are facing some very difficult trials.

This coming election year you might see for the first time since before 1980, the evangelical voters either stay home or walk away from the republican party.  It is not that all evange;licals are repsublicans, but a large precentage usual vote with that party.  So how did this happen and when did it start?  I want to suggest that in the fall of 2006, there was a decision made to "stand away" (what I mean is that the repubs want our votes -- but they don't what to associate with us -- we are bad publicity) and so a concerted effort by the moderate/liberal element in the party began to push us away.  A matter of fact, I wrote an editorial on the issue in the fall of '06.....

Letter to the Editor

Republicans No Longer Want Evangelicals’ Vote?

Dear Editor:

It is very unusual for me to be critical of the Republicans however recent statements by prominent Republicans and the eerie silence of present RNC leadership makes it necessary for me to speak. In October 2005,  former Republican Senator from Missouri John Danforth, while speaking at the Clinton School of Public Service pronounced that “evangelical Christians are ruining the Republican Party and dividing the Nation.” Obviously Mr. Danforth was reacting to the strong influence that Evangelical Christianity has had on things like Supreme Court nominees. It is true that many if not most evangelicals were very nervous about Harriett Miers nomination. She was a complete unknown; she had no experience as a jurist and even though she claimed to be a Christian, we like Mr. Danforth are good Missourians need some “SHOW-ME” evidence when it comes to her philosophy and leanings as a judge. If evangelical pressure caused Ms. Miers to withdraw, I think we did the country a favor. Whatever the case, I am puzzled – “evangelicals ruining the party???”

What I am incensed about is that Mr. Danforth’s comments were never rebuked or rebuffed by any other Republican. A matter of fact I went on a mission of calling the RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman and demanded a statement denouncing Danforth’s claims. No press release!  I contacted the State Republican office and they said they were unaware of the comments. No rebuke! I then called Lancaster office (twice) and David Dumeyer is yet to show me the courtesy to return my calls and contact me. I called Santorum, Specter (who probably believes what Danforth believes) and Pitts – not one comment, rebuke or press release. Are evangelicals now the “third rail” in the political world?

The Republicans’ silence in regards to Mr. Danforth’s degradation of evangelicals, like myself, is not only offensive, but outrageous just twelve months after WE gave them the White House and both Houses of Congress - AGAIN. My guess is that a year ago they would have reigned in Danforth and given him a Bible Study out back in the wood shed so not to lose the 4.4 million votes!

I recognize that evangelicals are a problem. We have moral clarity, in that we understand the meaning of right and wrong; our Biblical believes galvanize our convictions. And we have courage; emboldened by our love for God and desire to experience the blessing of our creator. We don’t like to compromise and that tenacity makes it hard to politic around what we say are non-negotiable. Our presence in any party makes it hard to play fast and loose with issues like abortion; same sex marriage; supreme court appointees; humanism in the classroom and parental authority. But remember, with the bad comes the good. We have brought to the table a voting block that any political operative would love to have on their team.

So I wait to see what Republican leader has the courage and wisdom to stand up and declare that Danforth is a complete idiot! If the silence continues then I must conclude that the Republicans no longer need our votes. Maybe they hope enough time will go by for us to forget Danforth’s attack of our character and the false accusation of our negative affect on a Party which has benefited from our support. And please don’t send me any letter of apologies quietly and behind close doors, the chance to do that has passed. If you appreciate our presence in the Party, stand up and be counted! If not maybe the Constitution Party could use 4.4 million votes next November!

There you have it....so what was the outcome of their pushing us away...let's see????  We lost the House and Senate that year.....Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House....Pres. Bush began getting trashed by everyone....greater divide occurred and we are now looking at McCann or Hill-obama in the White House.

I was driving home with our pastors yesterday and trying to sort out this year's presidental race and the mess we are in. For the first time in my life. i might not vote for the President. Since 1980 and the beginning of the Reagan revolution, I have cast a vote for a US President. But with the landscape of this year's candidates, I have no one to vote for.  Obviously Hillary and Obama are not on the radar. Their liberal voiting record not only scares me but I believe that both will set their guns on evangelical churches/christians to put us in our place and true persecurtion will be felt. They could easily make the case that it was evangelical christians that put George Bush in the White House -- and what did that get us?  A war, a sinking economy, division in the nation, and all the rest. I want to say that I have not been pleased with the Presidents performance and we did give him 4.4 million votes....so our disciplining might be warrented.

However, on the Republican side we are in trouble as well.  At this point McCann, Romney and Huckabee are still in the race with a substantial day for McCann this past Tuesday. If the trends continue, McCann will be the candidate. in all good conscience, i can not vote for him. He says that he has reached across the aisle and can bring the nation together.  The problem is he has more than "reached' he has been sitting in the seats across the aisle for a long time. The legislation he has passed has worn away much of what conservative Christians hold as essential. His collaboration of the gang of 14 last year to stop Bush's judges from getting in, was betrayal of his party. He says he has been "pro life" yet some of his actsions and decision raise question marks. Look he considered being John Kerry's running mate -- what is that?

I am greatly disappointed in Huckabee -- he has played right into McCann's hands for political positioning and syphened off conservative votes that probably would have pushed Romney pass McCann.  I can not understand why he is doing that, but he will have to answer for that later.  I think he will be shocked when Rudy is selected for  VP and not Huck!

Finally Mitt Romney is probably the only one i could feel good about. But then again it would a "lesser of..." kind of vote. So what is the alternative?  I think that the divide in the nation and the unsettled political feel in the country has a platform for a three party candidate to emarge this summer and give the two parties a geniune run for the money -- especially if McCann runs. A thoroughly conservative candidate can utterly destory his chances.  But then Hillary or Obama wins? Not necessarily.... I don't think the dems are settled either. I hear many say....a woman? an african-american? Are we really ready for either?  I think it would be great to have either -- by the way Condy Rice gives you both!  But the fact is...I think the whole thing is wide open. So who? I am not sure Condy rice is one; Newt is another; there are a whole alot of others. We wait and watch....

I have been away for a few days and so i have not been able to respond to the incredible upsat on Sunday night, when my Giants knocked the overwhelming favorite Pati-NOTS off the presumed petistle of footbal greatness. What an unbelieveable game and what a fantatsic out come as the G-men defense shut down the juggernaut of NE offense 17-14. When Plaxico made a prediction earlier in the week that the Giants would win and keep NE from scoring big -- every one thought he was crazy. But now he can say those painful words - I told you so!"

Even me...a little known blogger who laid out what some skeptically said was an impossiblity -- should again read my blog from last week on how the Giants will beat NE. Obviously, it was probably the only way that it could have happened. But the fact is NE did not "lose" the game -- they got beat! So with great pleasure I say "I told you so."

Finally, to all the TV sportcasters a word of wisdom. The pre-game hype focused on one thing - the Patriots being a team of destiny...the first 19-0 team in NFL history....the greatest team of all time! Little time was spent looking at the Giants chance of winning.  Even after the game, they had so little to talk with the winners because they could not conceive them winning. They were stunned and left to wonder what happened. Not one of the analysis picked the Giants -- not even with considering "if the giants do this" scenarios playing out. Shame on you. You were embarassing -- and it showed your bias. The league was in the same boat. To protect their PR pay day of having a 19-0 team -- they turned their head and avoid looking at the spying issue.  Now two days after their golden boys lost -- Goodell wants to investigate.  That is total disingenuious and shows me that everybody and their brother wanted the Pats and didn't give the G-men a snowball chance in Phoenix.....well it snowed on Sunday.  They told you so!
